Hi Heracles,

to me it sounds like it is doing something in memory and hitting a problem.

It could be a faulty memory chip.
If you have two RAM chips then you could remove one if possible and run the same stuff again, albeit a bit slower. If you get the same fault then replace the removed chip and remove the other one. Try again.

If problem goes away then get a new chip.
If problem stays then probably corrupt file.

If it happens with the same program all the time then reinstall the program.
If still happening with same program then it could be a dodgy program or try program on another computer if possible.

If ok on another computer then it sounds like the operating system or some other hardware fault. You could run up a virtual machine and try to duplicate your environment to see if either hardware or software.
