further suggestion
assuming you have tried plugging it in and it didn't all then "just
work" TM
tail /var/log/syslog -f
then insert it (assuming it has syslog not messages)
that should tell you what is or is not going on
this is me plugging some random usb nic into my 11.04 desktop and
network manager screwing around with it.
