Apologies for the top posting (beyond my control with this client). If you remove the new kernel, CentOS will clean up the grub config file for you.
Use yum erase kernel* to get a complete list of installed kernels and say no to proceed. Find the version number of the kernel you want to erase and then do yum erase kernel-2.6.XXXXXX substituting the correct version numbers. That will fix it nicely for you.
