Seem Brother is the way to go!
I got the "PIPS" with EPSON
as I couldn't find the dregs in CUPS
and nothing printed
With a "little" guidance,
I have now seen the light
of a Brother Laser.
The simplest way to get it to work with Linux is to choose a compatible
per-installed driver, such as for the Brother MFC- 9600 Foomatic/hl 1250.
Assuming this printer has a full cartridge, printing a couple of pages a week,
it would last about 20 years.

Hi M, apologies for the tardy reply.
The Brother HL-2140 includes a cartridge, is USB connected and works
with 'Nix without any problems.
The one we have is about three years old and has been without drama :)
From what I recall, we downloaded the drivers from Brother and
installed them, then identified the printer in the printer settings and
bingo. All good an going. This is on a Kubuntu 12.04, 64 bit, dual-core
laptop.
I don't recall it being difficult. There is some claim that you may need
to use 'dpkg -i --force-all' but I don't recall doing that.
The HL 2130 is available from Dickus Smithus for $49. I think we paid
about $48 for ours.

They're likely pretty close in specs I'd say - though I haven't checked
this very closely.
I've checked a few sites and most say that it works well with 'Nix.
