I'm guessing the issue is related to hanging whilst saving a draft.  I
wouldn't expect this to lock up the entire application, but then again,
the symptoms you've been given may not tell the whole story.

In Account Settings > Copies & Folders, there is an option to specify
where Drafts are stored.  Most likely this currently points to an IMAP
folder, so you can try pointing this to something under Local Folders instead.
