MUST invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the following position: *Advertised on 11 July 2007* *System Engineer* *Job Description:* The System Engineer's main responsibility would be to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of ICT operations that support the academic, research and administrative activities in the university. The System Engineer would lead a team of I.T. technicians providing I.T. support for the day-to-day operations of the University. Specific responsibilities include, but not limited to: *Responsibilities:* 1. Ensure that the IT Service Desk functions effectively and that timely and professional responses/services are given to queries and requests, including arbitrating conflicts between users and support team. Identify and escalate matters to IT Manager when necessary. 2. Perform daily analysis of the state of University's IT infrastructure and keeping tabs on new developments that have the potential of affecting users. These include review of server logs for discrepancies, perform network analysis for anomalies, ensure that the scheduled data backups are proceeding as planned and deploying necessary security updates and patches to client and servers. 3. Managing university core servers and the network infrastructure in general, while providing timely technical support to ensure their effective functioning. 4. Oversee the smooth operations of daily usage and management of teaching aids (projectors, laptop, speakers, etc.) and student facilities (laptop, wireless cards, headphones) loan scheme. 5. Oversee data backup designed to prevent loss of critical information and to ensure timely restoration of such information in an effective manner, in the event of a disaster. 6. Assisting the IT Services Manager with configuration management and documentation, as required. Assist the IT Manager in carrying out research on new technologies that can help improve delivery of services. 7. Assist the IT Services Manager in IT procurements and deployment. 8. Train and supervise a team of IT staff, ensuring that they carry out their job functions effectively. *Requirements:* 1. Candidate must possess at least a Bachelor's Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electronic Engineering or equivalent. 2. At least 2 years of working experience in Linux network administration, including setting-up firewalls, e-mail system, file and web servers. In particular, experience with qmail, samba, djbdns, squid, openldap, apache, perl/phyton and shell scripts would be advantageous. 3. Proficient in troubleshooting and solving both computer hardware and software problems. 4. Experience in setting-up/configuring network equipment, including switches, routers, and servers. 5.
