Just a little opinion

If you're using RPM package
You better start with .src.rpm (original source kernel), source is available
around /usr/src/redhat/ bla bla bla .tar.gz, extract and start from there

By default you will have same kernel config with existing running kernel and
simply
uncheck those NO_HZ, HIGH_RES_TIME and TIMER_STATS

If you start from .tar.gz you will start from beginning and that's painfull
:)
