Dear all, I posted the following question and received quite some supports from the list.

Following the links provided, I found on the web a live-cd having both GParted and Clonezilla (http://clonezilla.sourceforge.net/gparted-clonezilla/) Clonezilla is exactly what I needed: it copied my source disk on my target disk without problem, having recreated the partitions and the MBR "as is". I then disconnected my source HD and boot on the second HD without any problem. Next step: send the HD to Samsung for fixing: they will send me a new HD as replacement within 2 weeks... never mind: I have all my system up and running on a barracuda HD (promoted from slave to master :-) A couple of notes: 1) one of my partitions was not using a "standard" file system so the *nix command dd was used instead to copy cluster by cluster (1Gb for 20s) by Clonezilla (slower but rock solid) 2) Clonezilla does a lot more than only copy on disk to another in the same box: it can copy partitions thru the network to a bunch of PCs. This is certainly something of use for IT Mgr looking for mass update or data sharing.
