Well, it seems like Fortran is the most widely used in scientific apps
(e.g. weather, ocean modeling) and is the most efficient and easy to
program.  More highly optimizable than C.  So, it won't be going away
anytime soon.  Unfortunately, the "upgrades" to Fortran (77,90,95) tend
to make the optimizing less, er, optimal.
