Firefox downloaded over 500 million times

By Ryan Paul | Published: February 21, 2008 - 11:59PM CT

The Firefox web browser has now been downloaded over 500 million
times, a significant milestone for the open source software project.
To celebrate the occasion, Mozilla has teamed up with FreeRice and is
encouraging Firefox users to help feed the hungry.

At the FreeRice web site, users can play a simple vocabulary game
which is accompanied by advertising that helps pay to contribute rice
to people in need. For every question that users answer correctly, the
organization donates enough money for 20 grains of rice to the UN
World Food Program. Mozilla hopes that Firefox users will play along
and help push today's total count of rice grains to over 500 million.
The Mozilla blog notes that reaching that goal would feed 25,000
people.

The popularity of Firefox has climbed steadily in recent years, and
the program is thought to have over 125 million daily users. There are
obviously a lot more downloads than users, but Mozilla is working hard
to increase user retention.

To participate in the riceraiser, just click through to FreeRice.com
and answer some of the vocabulary quiz questions. It's easy and it
won't take you very long to play a few rounds.
