Interesting. I'll try this the next time. I couldn't use netselect-apt because it uses traceroute and my university messes up the traceroute. I can only see 1 problem: there are actually quite a few secondary mirrors around, but the debian mirror list is not fully updated with them. So that could actually be a problem since if you don't know the server, you won't be able to test it.
