Thanks for the info on 'su'.  Will give it a try.

Regarding persistence: from what I read on the Fedora 9 website,
persistence only happens if I install Fedora 9 on a USB thumbdrive
with extra space for the persistence data.

Is it possible to enable persistence via the LiveCD?  I have an old
Thinkpad R40 that does not support booting off a USB media (only CDROM
or floppy drive).  So a way to store persistent data on a thumbdrive
(perhaps in a special partition or file on the USB media) while
booting off a CD would be great for me.
