Nagios is fine, but it is more for network monitoring. My reading of the OP is that he is after something that will do environmental monitoring. I've actually been on the lookout for something similar myself for a while. My idea is to have some IP enabled temperature sensors, and monitor them using something like Cacti. But I haven't yet been able to find any suitable (reasonably priced) sensors.
