Well I might be a little biased but I would recommend starting out with Ubuntu on either your desktop or laptop, its install is nice and simple and things like codecs, drivers and package management is handled nicely. Plus it has a fantastic forum [0], great IRC channel [1] and an even better LoCo here ;) [2]. You can get Ubuntu at [3], I would recommend the latest version (9.10).
