The normal deadline for the 2007 WPI fellows has been extended by one month at my request as the new director -- specifically to attract journalists from around the world who are making inroads in Internet-based journalism, or who meet the three criteria listed below. Could you perhaps onpass the invitation letter and application forms to any international journalists you may know who fill the bill? The following is from that letter: The WPI program each year hosts ten foreign journalists on a 16-week intensive tour of the U.S. where they visit politicians, business leaders, newsrooms, prisons, schools, stay in U.S. homes, and much more besides. It's an immersion course in U.S. culture and journalism and this year they will be blogging + podcasting + videocasting as they go. As long as they get their applications to us by January 26, they'd have a crack at visiting and working in the U.S. at WPI's expense for four months later this year, from roughly late July to mid-November. We are looking for journalists with five years of professional experience who: <!--[if !supportLists] -->A) <!--[endif]- ->Use new media technologies such as the Internet, podcasting, blogging, and videocasting in ways that demonstrate how journalism can help build and serve a global civil society; <!--[if !supportLists] -->B) <!--[endif]- ->Use new media and/or traditional journalism to build and strengthen local, national, and global communities; <!--[if !supportLists] -->C) <!--[endif]- ->Use traditional and/or new media journalism to spread free speech in repressive countries and regions; expand human rights and economic development; and strengthen democratic processes. 2) Have excellent English-language speaking and writing skills. At the World Press Institute, we recognize that many international journalists are doing pioneering work in these areas. We invite them to apply for a 2007 WPI Fellowship. Journalists who are accepted into the program will have a chance during the four-month fellowship to share their practices and outlooks with other WPI fellows from around the world, as well as with U.S. journalists and with U.S. citizens from across the range of society. If you have received this letter, we think that your news organization or you personally likely fulfill the above requirements. The program remains highly competitive and we cannot guarantee any outcome, but we invite you to apply and we will give your application serious consideration. If you do apply, a few things to remember: 1) Visit the WPI web site at www.worldpressinsti tute.org <http://www.worldpre ssinstitute. org/> . The program is physically and emotionally demanding, as well as enriching. There are long weeks of travel and work involved. All fellows must be prepared to work closely and collegially at all times with nine other journalists from around the world. 2) WPI fellows receive round-trip transportation from their home countries to WPI at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. All program-related expenses for transportation and accommodations and a $25 per diem are provided by WPI. WPI is not responsible for personal needs including the purchase of clothing, film, postage, telephone and fax messages. 3) The 2007 program will last approximately 16 weeks, beginning in July. Highlights of WPI's programs of recent years can be found on our Web site. 4) January 26 is the day by which materials MUST arrive at WPI's office. An application form is attached and may be returned to the office by post, email, or fax. Send completed applications by post to Suzanne Lechtman, The World Press Institute, 1576 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105; by email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] edu; or by fax to 651-696-6306. Thank you for your interest in the World Press Institute and good luck! And thanks, Sonny, for passing this along to anyone who might be interested. Hopefully we'll get some journos who can help us on the global investigative projects that you -- and maybe one day we -- will produce collaboratively at ICIJ and WPI.
