We do this all the time even to shitty teletronics amps and they don't blow just don't take too long keep it to around 2-3 minutes and youll be ok.

Sully,

Don't worry about the amp crapping out.  If this disconnection is going to cause it, then the amplifier needs better VSWR protection in the first place.

Think of it this way, if you can use a paper clip for an antenna, surely the equipment will survive without an antenna connected for a short while.

You haven't done it yet??

Ron

Oh crap - I do this all of the time, except on the radio end! I guess I never thought of it... Never had a problem, though.

I set up a system at a location where I have two antennas, but only one is connected at a time. It is at a mountain farm where the farm manager roams the site with an omni connected to an aPPO. When he leaves for the day, he disconnects the omni and connects a panel that points at his house 5 miles away - seems like a PITA to me for the $330 saved, but it works...

I am upgrading one of my WiPoPs today from a 7.5 db omni to a 12 db omni.  I don't want to crawl into the attic of this building to unplug the unit if I don't have to.  If it were a new aPPo, I could just disconnect the Cat5...but it is not.

Is it possible to disconnect my current antenna and swap it with the other (disconnect time ~3 minutes) without damaging the radio (aPPo)??

My radio maintenance days (Air Force) tell me not to do this...too much reflected power could blow the amp circuit.

sB....what do you think??

Thanks,

Sully
