Run the coax from the antenna to a lightning arrestor then to the aPPO. Make sure the lightning arrestor itself is well grounded. As Eje suggested a few months ago on this list, you can get good lightning arrestors on eBay for much less than from a distributor. If you get the ones with N Female in and N Male out, you won't need two pigtails, just screw the arrestor onto the radio. Waterproof it like there's no
tomorrow.
So the lightning arrestor would have a copper line running down the tower to the tower ground or????
That would be a good solution. But the fact is usually the metal tower is a great ground itself. If you have a good copper strap or heavy wire grounding the arrestor to the tower, surges should be shunted down the wire or strap to the tower and then to ground. If there's any reason to think that the tower isn't grounded, run the copper down to a grounding rod. Having said all this, I'm a relative beginner. My opinion will be disputed by many and supported by some who have great expertise on lightning protection.
There have been some excellent waterproofing discussion here. I will follow those suggestions like you mention on the waterproofing. Thanks! Lewis
