Kevin,

I know you are in setup mode, but consider a 5 gig link using Motorola Canopy or Airaya.  Both are ethernet compatible and can offer a fatter pipe to service more APs.  Yes, they will cost more, (around $3000 for the link) but do offer a better solution than 802.11b for what you described.

Looks like you've got a little gem of a location. We're working on a
downtown area  that is similar. We should have clear line-of-sight to
most of the surrounding buildings. (which will be a nice change of pace)
I'm setting up the backhaul link today.

If there were no trees, and we weren't going 5,6,7, 12 miles out on
some of these links, and if there weren't so much 2.4GHz in the air
here already we would probably be able to do it without AMPs too.
But alas, you have to punch through somehow...

I will just throw this out there…

WiPoP 1: 7.5 db (vert pol) omni with aPPo mounted on a 2 story building just above the roof level of all my clients (~30 ft above ground).  Clients are using aBo with Maxrad 13db panel.  Trees are sporatic…some above roof level some at exact roof level.  So…my signal is scraping across roofs (I mount the antenna to avoid shooting through trees).  I have NO problems with getting RSSI 80% and LQ 80% or better within 2 miles.  The only reason I stop at 2 miles with this WiPoP is because it is in a little valley.  Cant go any further than 2 miles. (25 clients thus far including WiPoP 2 as one of them)

WiPoP 2 gets its backbone connectivity via an indoor airPoint (cb mode) inside a NEMA enclosure (with 8db patch antenna in box) pointed back to WiPoP 1.  WiPoP 2 is on a hill not far from WiPoP 1 (this is how I get out of the valley).  I then run it to a switch and back up to the WiPoP 2 config (detailed below).

WiPoP 2:  12 db (vert pol) omni with aPPo mounted on a 2 story building just above the roof level of all my clients (~30 ft above ground).  Clients are using aBo with Maxrad 13db panel.   Brand new housing area with no trees above roof line.  I have NO problems with getting RSSI 80% and LQ 80% or better within 4 miles.  I haven’t advertised outside of this range….I am sure I can go further.  (22 Clients thus far)

NO AMPS.  Just using the stock 12v PoE unit with about 50-70 ft of cat5.

Total clients = 47 (putting 8 more on by next weekend)

Total throughput going through WiPoP 1 = ~2 Gig per day

Throughput felt at ALL clients = 1.5 Meg up and back (limited only by T-1 backbone)

Using built-in MAC authentication and 128 bit WEP

Completely sB equipment.

Don’t know if this helps anyone….

I'm tryin dude!  The 19db is a Pac Wireless grid! :)  its for client installs.  I take it with me in my car to see if they can get service.  I unhook my ABBO from my omni and then start pointing.  As far as the RG59 cable, that is what came with the mag mount from pac wireless!

What happened to the 19dB panel?

I'm sooo confused.

OK, as to THIS post.

Don't use rg anything at these frequencies.  lmr is much better.

Second, if you are not OVER the trees, don't expect to get any range.  Try to get up another 80'.  Got a water tower or tall building around?

Get a real antenna on the client side.  No omni antennas unless your application HAS to be mobile.  And then you'll still need to amp it unless you only need very short ranges.

From the looks of this post, I'd say you are doing very well for you situation.

That help?

No prob: )

I have one APPO currently, it has a 2 inch N Ginder changer then plugs into the N connector on the 8 inch pigtal off a MaxRAD WISP 14db 90degree antenna.  No AMP just the APPO direclty to the antenna.  It is currently about 80 feet up with the sourrounding trees at 50-60 feet up.  The area is heavy trees, but we are above them.  I can get good coverage anywhere within .25 miles with just a ABI.  I get better singal when I use a ABO with 12 feet of RG5 (whatever comes with the mag mount from pac wireless) connected to a 7db mobile antenna.  I can get about .75 miles out with just the ABI in one spot on the road.  Other than at, I hav'ent got much else.  I have tried from a hill with a good line of sight to the APPO.   I have a ABT, that just sux so far!

Any other suggestions?

Dennis

1st off you need to give us details one how you have the APPO set up on a tower on a hill on a house, does it have an omni if so what type what polarity etc. Did you do a site survey in that area to see if there is interference especially if you are vertical polarity! if there is which I suspect then I would suggest going H polarity. Until we know your layout we can offer much more.

I have been having a hard time getting signal.  Most of my customers are around 40% RSSI with Airbridge Indoors and are working well so far.  But, all these locations are within a mile of my Tower.  I have a VERY hard time getting anything over a mile!

Anyone wish to give me some pointers? I have been using a AirBridge Outdoor plus a 7db omni mag mount from Pac Wireless and a 19db grid from Pac to test for signal.  But it really stinks when I don't even know if my signal from the tower is getting to me..  The only thing I have is SimpleMonitor, which takes some time to assoicate sometimes.
