Years ago I used to do some lightning protection consulting and seminars
for protecting Radio sites. One common misconception is that a shielded
cable will keep the surge energy off the conductors inside. WRONG! Years
ago the folks at PolyPhaser did some testing by applying a 10,000 amp
surge to the shield of a cable. they measured what was at the end and
found that half of the surge energy was transfered to the inner
conductors. The small wonder of capacitance that transfers energy between
parallel plates (or wires in this case). Still need an ethernet protector
at the ground, shielded or not.
