You really need to look at the spectrum and see what you are dealing with.  If you are getting interference in band (ex: a noisy telex amp on channeel 1 causing probs on ch11) a bandpass won't do you any good.  The only thing a bandpass will do is filter out frequencies just outside of the ism band.  Say you are colo on a pcs tower (Lots of 1.9g) this can cause poor sensitivity on your rx.  A bandpass would be good.  Cellular is roughly 800 to 900mhz.  Lots of high power paging is around 900mhz.  Third order harmonics are your worst nightmare.  800mhz X 3 is bingo.....2.4g.  Most 2.4 amps have band pass filters built in.  Telex and YDI both do.  You really need to identify if the problem is on your channel or near your channel.

Bandpass filters are great if you are colocating and have lots if noise just outside your band.  You can add them to help the sensitivity of your radio.  Be aware of the loss associated with them.  Just adding an amp does not compensate for the loss in the filter (when receiving).  You are adding the filter to improve rx sense.  If you nock your rx down 3db you just lost 3db of rx sense regardless of how much you amp it after that.

Don't use a bandpass if your noise is within the 2.4ism band.  It won't help.  Keep in mind if you are using an amp you have already installed a bandpass.

Collocating on the same tower with HAM radio, cellular, or pager equipment

that operates in a frequency that is close to, or is a harmonic of the 2.4GHz

band. I think someone mentioned on another list that some part of 900-923MHz

can interfere with 2.4GHz.

A bandpass filter will filter out ALL other frequencies except for the

one that you want. The Teletronics (and others for this application) allows

2400-2483Mhz and effectively blocks all other frequencies.

Someone break down to me when bandfilters are required or useful exactly?

PS Where are you located, I might let you use mine for a while. Helping each other is what it's all about here.

I guess one of these days I am going to need to get a spectrum analyzer...

anybody know of a decent SA that you can get for less than $1000? Maybe one

that uses a laptop/card/software?

The Linksys might have bad sideband suppression and/or perhaps he is

using a noisy amp. Hard to tell without proper testing equipment,

though.

Dave, is it possible to change the polarity on your link?
