I've taken a look at MicroTik's website and it seems to be software that runs on a desktop. Is this correct or is it a separate piece of hardware similar to a Linksys or Cysco, etc. router?

The MikroTik router actually handles the HotSpot login page. Through the use of Firewall rules we've set things up to allow a link from the HotSpot login page to a secure page on our web server so that people can sign up.
