Title: RE: [smartBridges] WEP encryption
haha!  I wouldn't be surprised if that's all this guy cares about either.

I told him to check out getting a subscription to supernews for $6.  He still makes out better keeping us and paying supernews than sticking with cable and getting newsgroups for free.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advise!

Yes, I know there are useful newsgroups out there. Problem is
nobody was using those...  :-)

Newsgroups are K3WL!  Have him sign up with Supernews or one of the other subscription servers.  You do not have the time or storage space to handle the 400+ gigs of daily newsgroup postings and still have any kind of message retention.

Newsgroups operate kind of like this list, except the messages are stored on a server that users can access.  NNTP is the protocol used and it requires a reader or client like Outlook Express or Agent to access and read the messages.

The big ISP’s have newsgroup servers, but a small ISP just can’t keep up with 40,000+ newsgroups, the related storage space and the bandwidth required to handle it all.

Sorry for posting this here, but I thought you people would know more about it.

A customer of mine keeps asking for a newsgroup server name.  I've never used newsgroups nor know how they work, but apparently his last ISP had a newsgroup server he used.  I've found some names of free newsgroup servers on a google search, but don't know what to tell him so that he can use it.

Anyone know about this?

Thanks,
Sevak
