I played around with JFFNMS the other day and I fell in LOVE again!!
(Shh don't tell my wife)..

JFF NMS (or Just For Fun Network Monitoring System as it stands for)
is really cool. A pain to get running but boy when your setup and
running it's an awesome tool especially if your units support snmp.
If they don't support SNMP you can still monitor reachability
(basically a ping that records ping times and package drops).
If it support snmp then you can get some really cool stats. Like my MT
boxes I can monitor memory usage, disk usage and many other things.
The same goes for my Cisco router be able to graph CPU usage etc.

You have a status info screen where you can quickly see how your
network is behaving. Say if your monitoring port 80 on one machine and
it goes down then you will see a alarm there etc.. Way cool.

Best thing of all it stores the data in a mysql database and you can
go in check any period of time that you have recorded. So you can see
a 30 min period 10 days ago if you want.
php, mysql and rrdtools at it's very best.

BOB> rrdtool + cacti can do this (if you like MRTG, you'll love these)

BOB> The output is nice pretty graphs with ping times (or anything else..)
