Hi everyone,

Commit ea4644129e has just landed in smartos-live today (not in yesterday's build). This change brings some improvements to the GRUB menu over from SDC. Grub will attempt to render its menu on both the VGA output and a serial port at the same time (preferring ttyb, then ttya, then ttyc, then ttyd in that order if the preceding one doesn't work) . This means that hardware built to Joyent's specifications will now be able to choose a grub entry over the IPMI console when using SmartOS boot media.

Additionally it changes how you choose where the OS console goes. The default to go over the VGA remains unchanged, but now instead of extra grub menu entries, if you want to change to e.g. ttya or ttyb, you can, as GRUB will tell you, drop to a GRUB command line, run a command, hit escape, and then boot. You can also edit the menu.lst file on your USB stick to make that change persist.

Also, it adds to the noinstall menu option a reminder of the credentials to use to log in.

Here are the before and after of what it looks like:

And finally, for those who build their own SmartOS media, the build_iso/build_usb tools allow you to specify a different default OS console (and thus a different order preference for GRUB to try for menu rendering) when you run them.

Happy Friday!
-Nahum
