Yes sure. While RPMs can be unpacked with cpio, the goal is to have a
system which is maintainable and upgradeable in the long run.

Also, usually products packaged with RPM have other dependencies, so having
a full CentOS LX zone is great, just run yum and job done.

We have a few apps which are RPM only and only supported on RHEL or CentOS
and currently we are kind of forced to run RHEL or CentOS on top of VMware
for these (that's about to change soon hopefully).

PS: There is always some legacy app needing special treatment....
