You cannot use zlogin to access a Linux KVM instance. As that's trying to log into the actual OS instance that's running QEMU as opposed to the guest. > vmadm console hangs ... Did you specify an ssh key when logging in? If so, you should be able to log in as the ubuntu user. Otherwise, you should be able to use VNC, which you can get from the vmadm info option.
