Thanks for the suggestions!  I didn't think about the possibility of
compression so I'll look into this further.  However, snapshots don't seem
to be the issue.  If it's helpful, the KVM was originally created from an
image and not built from scratch.  I was able to reproduce the problem on
another VM (on the same server).  I'm going to run the same scenario on
another server running the same/different version of SmartOS to see if the
problem is more widespread.  Again, thanks for the help!
