Follow the instructions for setting up serial console access to the VM here:
http://wiki.illumos.org/display/illumos/Serial+Console+in+VirtualBox
then in grub, edit SmartOS+kmdb, enter command line mode and enter
variable os_console ttya
<ESC>
b
and you will have a working serial console.
