That is the ultimate goal, yes. The way we have gone forward with this for illumos-joyent is simply to cut SSH out of the gate entirely, and build it in our distro-specific illumos-extra. There have been a number of other approaches we discussed over the last few weeks, and I guess we will have to have this discussion over again with the rest of the Illumos community. IMHO, anyway, the toughest part of this is that different people and groups have subtly different views about what the Illumos gate “should” be or should contain, versus what distros should be responsible for. The most important thing from our perspective is to make sure that the patched OpenSSH we’re proposing works (no matter what the method for dealing with it upstream turns out to be), so to that end we’d like to run with it alone for a bit and try to make sure any kinks and issues get ironed out.
