Not replying to anyone in particular, but just jotting down some notes on what HA gives and doesn't, and why it's worthwhile to explore "Application - level HA". Perhaps some can use this for internal discussions when asked "Why use SmartOS when it doesn't give VM/Zone HA?" to explore what exactly is it that Hypervisor level HA gives.

They should also discuss what the end user actually wants and given the costs, willing to accept as a compromise.

A year or so back I was able to knock a zero off the budget for a network operating centre infrastructure budget by using SmartOS instead of VMware. Most of the key applications they wanted to run are windows based and don't have any a native HA (or if they did, the cost was ridiculous) but a fail-over solution using ZFS replication was deemed acceptable given the cost savings. We were able to draw up an SLA with different down times and transaction losses for each system which enabled us set the frequency for replicating each VM.

Granted this was probably a special case (there were systems up-stream that would buffer transactions during fail-over), but is shows that customer "must haves" are often negotiable.
