I've always selected (openssh-server) it manually in the install process.

sudo netstat -pan | grep 22 will show if there if sshd is running on port
22.

For example:

nic@vshell:~$ sudo netstat -pan | grep 22
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:22              0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN
     824/sshd
tcp        0     52 192.168.11.207:22       192.168.1.157:57243
 ESTABLISHED 11050/sshd: nic [pr
tcp6       0      0 :::22                   :::*                    LISTEN
     824/sshd

You can also try:

nic@vshell:~$ dpkg -l  openssh-server
...
ii  openssh-server                 1:6.6p1-2ubuntu2     amd64
 secure shell (SSH) server, for secure access from remote machines
