Distributors of NTP-enabled operating systems are generally not permitted to use the bare "pool.ntp.org" DNS name in any default NTP configurations[1]. To this end, I have been arranging a SmartOS-specific DNS name with the NTP Pool Project that we _can_ use. Hopefully this will be the default in SmartOS soon -- I'll keep you posted!
