If it's not working, there are a few things to start with. The first, is making sure the IP level information is right, double check the output of ifconfig and make sure that it hasn't been flagged as a duplicate, double check netstat -rn, and similar. The next question is whether or not it's on physical hardware or this is running as a virtual machine somewhere. Basically, if we can't reach the gateway, or some other link local device, then we'll have to go from there.
