Another device driver, or even up in user space. To know, you’d need to debug
it with kmdb most likely. If you boot with -k to kmdb, you can try pressing
F1-A when it hangs, and then using kmdb $C to get a backtrace. That will
probably be the most helpful. However, this may or may not work depending on
where it is in the boot. And typically this level of debugging does require a
certain level of skill with kmdb, etc.
Note that running on illumos on laptops is often a tricky proposition. Laptop
hardware is constantly changing, and many devices found on laptops are ill
supported, or even entirely unsupported, by illumos. (The reason for this is
quite simple — the level of hardware churn in this space outpaces our
engineering resources to focus on supporting such hardware — and none of the
commercial contributors to illumos have expressed any desire to contribute
towards supporting illumos on mobile, or even desktop, hardware much — pretty
much all the investment is on server systems, where enterprise grade hardware
tends to have far less churn, and better support for other operating systems
that we can use to help bootstrap our efforts in illumos.)
