The problem is that once you do that, there is no way to power it back
down, until perhaps reboot.

the right way (tm) to do that with debian/fso is using dbus/framworkd calls. have a look at the wiki for mdbus, there are very close examples which should give you the idea. additionally, the openmoko-panel-plugin allows for this kind of thing via a gui.
