the install completes, however, the reboot produces a black
screen with a small portion of the toolbar in the lower left
of the screen (not upper side).

I find this in ~/.xsession-errors:
Xsession: X session started for root at Sat Sep 19 09:41:35 UTC 2009

X itself is running, but it is not of any use ...
What package is missing? *me asking dpkg*

neo:~# dpkg -l \*cairo\* | grep ^ii
ii libcairo2 1.8.8-2 The Cairo 2D vector graphics library
ii python-cairo 1.8.6-1+b2 Python bindings for the Cairo vector graphic

good enough? No? Hm. apt-cache search cairo does not list something
obvious to me.

FWIW: my install was interrupted, because configuring localepurge does not
work in unattended mode, and I lost stdin due to </dev/null in my
test script.
So. I might as well do the whole thing again ... :-?

Cheers,
Erich
