Looking closer, it might be something else after all. What does

 fping -C 1 127.0.0.1

say on your system? Does fping appear to work otherwise?

I assume you are running the 'armel' architecture rather than the
discontinued 'arm' one?

FWIW, both fping itself and the Smokeping fping probe do seem to work
for me on a qemu emulated armel system.
