What is your definition of lower cost? I bought Samba 55-SET gsm/gprs USB modem, it does not have a cable but goes directly to USB port. You can use usb extender cable of course. It was 150 euros, some might say its expensive others say a cheap. I have had it for few weeks now but seems to be a reliable, smslib supports it fine.
This is not listed in smslib compatibility html page yet, maybe some admin can put it there. http://www.openxtra.co.uk/accessories/sms-modems/samba55/prodsamba55.html My environment: WinXP-SP3, Java1.6.x, RXTX comport library, smslib package. Must enable NOFLUSH parameter, see Settings class for more information.
