So, with the "-Dsmslib.nocmms=1", the sending problem is solved - that's
good.

Regarding the read error, you have a real problem here. The correct
behaviour is to throw this error periodically (what the latest version
does), since SMSServer periodically tries to read messages from your phone.
You can disable this by defining your gateway (=modem) as outbound only.

In either case, there seems to be an issue with your modem...
