The modem and Carrier combination at the time was capable of sending over GPRS. I am not sure if I had GPRS active during the test. More recently however T-Mobile has restricted sending messages this way. The RAW connection rate is close burst rate of the physical rate of the multiplexed control channel so I would not think that GRPS was active. This is pretty much the maximum rate for a good signal with low overall traffic and no incoming messages or calls to the device. Theoretically, the tower and modem could set-up and use more channels to pass the messages back and forth but I have never seen this happen.
