Disclaimer: This might not happen to ALL, this just happened to MOST OK, this isn't meant to be another cliche of PhD Comics (www.phdcomics.com), this is just to share with my fellows postgrad students. Glossary(In case you didn't know them) Grad Schools is any place where people intentionally goes to get their Master or PhD degree.The term fiction here refered to the public opinion, while facts refered to the reality... or reality I know, based on my experience or other's experience which I knew. Fiction: People who goes to grad schools somehow have advanced intelligence. Fact: No, they don't. (Yeah, that hurts) Fiction: People who goes to grad schools are rich! They have money to pay the fees! Fact: If that was true, then why most (not all, of course) of the grad students hungrily look for 'scholarships', part-time jobs in the university, or sometimes even doing other things (selling cookies, photocopies, babysitting, or even doing false financial reports). Fiction: People who goes to grad schools have great hunger of knowledge. Fact: Only few of them do... the real knowledge they need is how to have a 'real life' in many different ways. Fiction: People are doing important researches in grad schools. Fact: It depends on how we difine 'important'. For example, many telecommunication providers enjoy huge benefits of having 3.5G technologies, and postgrad people suffers from inventing it. (OK, now think about different subjects such as history, art, or any other less-important subjects...) Fiction: After graduating from grad schools, people gets more job-opportunities Fact: Most of the grad students have multiple accounts on JobStreet or JobDB, and stay active in those accounts for more than two years. Fiction: They are getting smarter and creative after grad schools Fact: Yes, they know how to use the combo of 'ctrl-c' and 'ctrl-v' buttons on their keyboards. Fiction: Life is exciting in grad schools Fact: Try to check their average status in their facebook! Fiction: Getting Master or PhD is a damn serious job which take high-level of commitment Fact: Try to offer postgrad students a well-paid job or higher level careers, and you'll see how their commitment on their studies. Fiction: Going to grad schools is voluntarily. Fact: True (if there is no other choice) Fiction: People spend most of their time studying in their grad schools. Fact: Most of them achieved high levels in Mafia Wars or Farmville. Fiction: Grad students know everything about their subject matter. Fact: True, if their subject is latest movies, celebrity gossips, or political trivia. Fiction: PhD (or Doctoral) is the highest and most prestigious academic title in the world. Fact: Why most of them are looking for something called PostDoc? Fiction: (Related to previous statement) Post Doctoral is a prestigious job. Fact: True, when you have no other options. Fiction: Grad students are dilligent, they work until 4am. Fact: They started at 3am, after watching EPL... or it is the last days before submission deadlines. Fiction: It's a good advice to get your postgrad education right after you get your bachelor degree Fact: Try to find a real job first. Fiction: The university gave lots of money (scholarships and allowance) to postgrad students Fact: Why more people chose to work in a multi-national company, then? Fiction: It is respectable to be graduated from postgrad studies Fact: As long as you don't talk about financial matter, it IS! Fiction: People in grad schools use 'high-level-language' when they are talking to each other. Fact: True, if you consider "My supervisor sucks!" as a high-level-language. Fiction: Grad students know what they are doing. Fact: Yes, before they come to a highschool reunion and found that others live happier. Fiction: I want to send my children to grad school! Fact: After they got broken hearted or kicked off from their previous job, it could be a good decision. Of course, a talent show should be considered first. Fiction: University life is heaven for grad students! They have free facilities like swimming pools, gym, or theatres. Fact: That's what THEY say. Fiction: Library is the 'home' of the postgrad students. Fact: True, after they found that the rent of the hostel is too high and no friends like to share rooms with them. Fiction: Grad schools are always surrounded by good-looking undergrad students asking for help. Fact: Who told you that? I want to go to his university! Mohon kesadaran dan kedewasaan masing-masing untuk untuk berdiskusi sesuai topik. Masih banyak masalah lain yg lebih penting (menurut saya) untuk diselesaikan. Contohnya : - Alumni SMA 2 Jbg sepertinya sudah ribuan, sukses semua.. sayang kok tidak terorganisir, padahal kalo di organisir kok kayaknya bisa berbuat lebih buat almamater kita. - Di facebook ada beberapa groups sekolah kita, ada yg anggotanya sampe 1000-an, lha milis ini anggotanya cuman 400-an. kenapa ?? kenapa energi kita tidak kita gunakan untuk memajukan milis ini ? Contoh lainnya tentu masih banyak lagi... Thread ini closed ya.. silahkan disambung dengan thread dari mbak hepi yang lebih seru.
