It should indicate multiple quoting levels -- ie you were replying to something that was included. Here I see 2 levels for your name, and 4 for the text (which was relevant so was included). I think Word 1 is often seen as the beginning...:-) According to Wikipedia MacWrite, Microsoft Word and other word processing programs for the bit-mapped Apple Macintosh screen, introduced in 1984, were probably the first true WYSIWYG word processors to become known to many people until the introduction of Microsoft Windows. Of course there were machines that did stuff like that for quite some time.
