Well you will need to have a hotmail account. Though once you have that you can use Adium http://adium.im/ which is free and can be used to connect to any of the chat services. That is probably the simplest option. Though Microsoft do a messenger which enables you to do the same plus if you use it it keeps your hotmail account active otherwise you have to visit it every 30 days at least.
