would disconnecting the internal drive be just as good (don't 
want to buy a new drive just to test it)?

if this turned out to be the case, how much would it cost to get 
the files retrieved? It's a 100 gig disk, not sure of how much 
is on it.

I'm assuming specialist tools are required to read such a disk?
