Would it be better if I renamed the new drive to match the old? It's
evidently recognised in some way that I am really the same user, even though
the path, and the hardware, are different. But I wonder whether having a
different volume name will cause trouble down the line.

Reuse the backup, it'll add incrementals onto the end of the last
backup. It's an automatic replacement for what was a tedious
modification of xattr values in 10.5 when changing Macs on a time
machine backup.
