Sounds like font corruption to me, have you added any new fonts lately?

Try rebooting holding down shift, the Mac will do a safe boot (takes much 
longer than a normal boot) which will get rid of all the temporary files 
including font caches.

Restart normally afterwards and check to see if it's working.
