Hi Paul Streaming's always a tough one. The Apple TV will only stream what's in your iTunes library unfortunately but with Apple licensing AirPlay to third party developers someone might make a streaming device for regular video.
I use a TVIX M6500A with a 2TB drive to store my videos, it'll play virtually any format and is compact and unobtrusive.
