Hi there...

I have an issue when trying to burn DVDs with my PowerBook G4 (12" screen,
running 10.4.11). It seems to have had "issues" for a little while but
having just had three out of four DVDs turn out at coasters I'd love to know
what might be the cause.

Using Toast (6.11) I can get the computer to burn a disc (it seems) OK, but
it has failed three times during the verification. However, the speed that
I select in the "Write Speed" options menu has no relation to the actual
burning speed. One disc took 9 minutes or so at supposedly 4x speed, and
when I selected 2x, it took just under two minutes! These oddities seem to
be the case irrespective of whether I use the internal Superdrive or an
external firewire LaCie which I prefer to use.

Going back in time, two years ago I had the in-built superdrive replaced
under extended warranty (just) at Robert Harding's place. I remember
chatting to the engineer there who pointed out something to me that I have
no idea what needs to be done to fix it: He said, that when he looked into
the "About this Mac" section, he could not find any details of write speeds
in connection with the built-in drive - either the old one or the subsequent
replacement. I do not know how to correct this, if indeed it can be
corrected.

If any of this makes any sense and someone can point me to the cause (other
than rubbish discs, although they are Verbatim which have always been good
in my experience) I would be grateful.

Andrew
