I did a software update this afternoon. It installed the latest version of OS X
(10.6.8 ?), java and something else whose name has vanished from my mind! All
this on my Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook (black).

It told me I needed to restart so I did and now I see the Apple logo, the
spinning bars and then some text alluding to a kernel panic followed by the
dialogue box telling me I need to turn my Mac off and then on again.

I can't get around this. I've repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and repaired
the disc using Disk Utility. It does start up in safe mode but I can't do what
Apple suggest as the airport isn't switched on (I'll get an Ethernet cable
tomorrow.

Is there anything else I should try?

Regards
Philippe
