Martin, Not sure what the triangle means but if it is a red no entry symbol:
For an external drive, if all you want to do is access the flies therein, select the drive and do a Get Info on it (in File Menu). Right at the bottom of the window that opens you will see a check box marked "Ignore ownership on this volume" select the check box (you may have to 'undo' the padlock symbol first with your password. Close the Get Info window and you will now be able to access all your files on the external drive.
